ACT SIX
FADE TO INT. BRIG-SPACE
MAG, MOG, and MOKAR are sitting in the Brig; the other combatants are in various other cells. SARA, FROST, and KAHL are locked in a heated conversation.
KAHL (angry)
Two attempts on my life, now you lock away my entire delegation!
SARA
Your delegation isn’t exactly blameless, General, two of my Marines are in Sickbay.
KAHL
They were defending my honor!
SARA (annoyed)
It looked a lot like attempted murder!
KAHL
From the beginning, you and your crew have failed in every way to keep the peace during these negotiations and now you insult the honor of my men? I am done with you, wretched female!
He looks over at the Three Brothers.
KAHL
I will have you released in one hour, when they let you out, follow the protocols.
KAHL storms out. SARA looks at FROST.
SARA
What does that mean?
MAG speaks up, he and his brothers seem strangely satisfied by this.
MAG
It means that the negotiations are over, he will be leaving by shuttle and we’ll launch an official protest by subspace.
His face turns sympathetic.
MAG
I’m sorry.
FADE TO EXT. NELSON’S DOCKING BAY-SPACE
A Small Klingon Shuttle departs from KAHL’S Ship and slides into place next to the Nelson’s saucer section.
CUT TO INT. HALLWAY-SPACE
FROST and MUKET are in the hallway outside WOLFE’S quarters, sight of the first attack. FROST’S doing his detective thing, taking in every inch of the crime scene with his eyes.
MUKET
I don’t understand…if the Klingons are leaving, why are you still trying to figure out what happened?
FROST
Nobody tries to kill anybody over gas mining rights and I want to know what’s really going on here. Now hand me that data padd.
MUKET sighs and complies.
CUT TO INT. BRIG-SPACE
WOLFE is laughing with his brothers as they await their release. CALLAHAN walks up behind them.
CALLAHAN
Time to go boys, your shuttle’s here.
WOLFE
Damn, sort of hoping to get a few more minutes with them.
CALLAHAN
No can do, sir. Kahl says he’s leaving now.
MOKAR looks a little sad.
MOKAR
Then our time together is at an end.
CUT TO INT. HALLWAY-SPACE
FROST stares at the padd, it’s a frozen capture of the hallway dot map from earlier. He’s trying to recreate the scene. FROST lays down exactly where MOKAR fell, from the floor he notices a scorch mark in the wall, where MOKAR fired a single shot at his attacker.
FROST makes a gun with his fingers and extends his arm. His free hand taps a loose tile in the floor.
FROST looks up at MUKET.
FROST
Do you have a hyper spanner?
CUT TO INT. BRIG-SPACE
WOLFE and his Brothers are having a moment, the brothers seem more emotional, sad.
MOG
It has been too long, brother.
WOLFE
I agree, we should do this again.
The Brothers look at each other, something about what WOLFE just said really…makes them sad.
MOKAR
Yes….we should.
CUT TO INT. HALLWAY-SPACE
MUKET pulls up the deck tile, flips it over. There’s a small device attached to the underside of the tile. FROST taps his comm.
FROST
Walsh, I want you to check something for me…
CUT TO INT. DOCKING BAY-SPACE
The three Klingon brothers walk down the hallway. From their POV, they see KAHL and the rest of the Klingon delegation standing at the doorway to the shuttle. They march on, but they act as though they are going to their death.
CUT TO INT. NELSON BRIDGE-SPACE
WALSH is looking at the dot map. The red dot is back and it’s standing next to MUKET and FROST’S dot.
WALSH
Yeah, you were right…it’s right there.
CUT TO INT. HALLWAY-SPACE
FROST and MUKET look at each other.
FROST and MUKET (simultaneously)
Oh shit…
They scramble down the hallway.
CUT TO INT. DOCKING BAY-SPACE
The end of the hallway is almost near the brothers now; they look like something terrible is coming. They step ever closer. Their footsteps falling heavy.
FROST and MUKET suddenly step into view, panting, out of breath…
FROST
Gentlemen, may I have a word with you?
FROST holds up the little device. The Brothers look beaten.
FADE TO INT. READY ROOM-SPACE
SARA is sitting behind her desk; WOLFE is on one side, MUKET on the other. FROST confronts the Brothers, still holding the small device in his hand.
FROST
It was a good plan. Use the Orions as a scapegoat, get Kahl to call off the conference, then…(thinks about it) Were you going to kill him on the shuttle? Shoot him in the back?
WOLFE (angry)
This is insane!
FROST
It fits the evidence.
WOLFE
What evidence? All you’ve got is some random gizmo you found under a floorboard!
SARA raises her hand, to stop WOLFE.
SARA
He’s got a point.
FROST
One of these three have been present at the scene of both attacks, they started the fight that made Kahl decide against the conference, we know that Mog was in the room with the “Orion” just before the bomb was planted in Kahl’s quarters.
WOLFE
Then why aren’t you trying to find the Orion?
MUKET
Haven’t you been listening? That “gizmo” is the Orion Assassin.
FROST
It emits a signal that the computer reads as a life sign…the assassin we saw on the monitor.
WOLFE turns to his brothers…stunned. They hang their heads in shame.
FROST
You couldn’t just kill Kahl in his quarters on his ship, you needed a scapegoat, then you needed to isolate him…in a small shuttle when his defenses were down. Maybe wait for him to take a nap…
MOKAR (bitter)
Enough. You speak of things you know nothing about.
FROST
How was it going to be done? A knife in the back? In the heart?
MAG
Do you confuse us with some cowardly terrorist or sneaky Romulan? We are Klingon warriors! We were going to lay down our lives for the safety of our Empire!
FROST nods.
FROST
A bomb then…this was a suicide mission, you get him on a shuttle, set off another void ripper bomb and give your lives to slay your quarry.
MUKET
And the Orions take the blame.
SARA’S comm beeps.
WALSH (over comm)
Sir? General Kahl wants an explanation for why we’re still holding his people.
WOLFE looks devastated.
WOLFE
Why?
MAG
For the good of our people, brother. Kahl is a monster and he now sits only a heart beat away from Martok’s chair. If he is not stopped now…
WOLFE
Then challenge the guy to a duel!
MOG
It is more complicated than that…it is a matter of politics not warriors now. If Kahl must die it must not be by a Klingon’s hand or we will split in civil war!
SARA (into comm)
Tell General Kahl that we’ll be right with him…and that I’ve got quite a story to tell him when I get there.
WOLFE
Who put you up to this? WHO MADE YOU DO THIS?
FROST walks over to WOLFE, he already knows the answer.
FROST
It was Martok.
MOKAR
Why do you think we were elevated to noblemen? Why do you think our family name is now spoken with honor?
WOLFE
Oh dear god…
SARA looks over at FROST.
SARA
We can’t tell Kahl.
FROST
If Martok is responsible…that means it’s a private matter for the Klingons. Warning Kahl would be a violation of the prime directive.
MUKET (shocked)
So you’re just going to let them kill a man and commit suicide?
SARA
Self determination, if that’s how the Klingons want to choose their future leaders then so be it. We’re not Klingon citizens and we can’t-
A thought strikes her.
SARA
We can’t do anything…but Major Wolfe can. He holds dual citizenship with the empire; if he wanted to…he could tell everyone the truth about what happened here. Let them know that Martok murdered a man in cold blood.
The Brothers turn to look at WOLFE and they see that yes, he would do that. He’s so angry and hurt; he has this shell-shocked look in his eyes.
SARA
Set off that bomb…and you’ll put an end to everything Martok has tried to accomplish, good and bad.
MOG looks at MAG, who looks at MOKAR.
MOKAR nods. MOG reaches into his pocket and produces a void ripper bomb, he sets it down on the desk. They go to leave.
FROST stops them.
FROST
This plan…it was pretty good but it all hinged on a lot of inside information about our ship’s systems. (tilts his head, curious) Where’d you get that?
They say nothing and walk out of the room.
FADE TO INT. DOCKING RING-SPACE
WOLFE can barely look at his brothers as he marches them back to their ship. The four of them don’t speak. One by one they file on to the ship until MOKAR is alone in the hallway with WOLFE. MOKAR opens his mouth to say something. Before he can speak, WOLFE grabs the baldric his brother gave him and pulls it off his chest. Then he drops it on the floor.
MOKAR nods…he understands. This is going to take a long time to heal.
CUT TO EXT. NELSON DOCKING BAY-SPACE
The shuttle detaches from the Nelson and flies towards KAHL’S ship, which speeds to warp immediately.
The Orion ship departs as well.
CUT TO INT. MARTOK’S CHAMBER-DAY
A soft, hazy rain falls on the capitol city of the Klingon Homeworld, MARTOK watches his empire through the vast window of his private office.
MAG, MOG, and MOKAR all stand at attention behind him.
MAG
We have failed, I am sorry.
MARTOK (grimly)
No, this is not your failure. This is mine.
MOKAR
Our nobility is forfeit, we have not earned it-
MARTOK (harsh)
No!
The three brothers freeze.
MARTOK
Never say that! Merely by agreeing to perform this duty has shown the depths of your loyalty to me and to the Empire, you have already earned your noble house! (turns back to the window) I am the one who should be ashamed.
He waives his hand.
MARTOK (bitter)
Leave me, go be with your families and do not trouble yourselves any longer.
They leave and MARTOK walks away from the window, ashamed with himself.
MARTOK
When I asked for your assistance, you assured me the plan was without fail.
KOVIR THE BONELORD emerges from the shadows of the office and settles into a chair across from MARTOK.
KOVIR
Because I believed that your men would succeed, clearly I was mistaken.
MARTOK (angry)
DO NOT BLAME MY MEN!
KOVIR
You misunderstand me, it was my plan, therefore it is my fault. The blame remains with me.
MARTOK slams his fist on the desk, not angry just…helpless.
MARTOK (slight chuckle)
The Empire is in danger; Kahl grows more powerful every day, but at least the mysterious mercenary I hired to kill my enemies is sorry for failing to do what I pay him to do!
KOVIR raises an eyebrow.
KOVIR
I told you that the plan was inherently risky and when the Emperor came to me on your behalf…I told him that payment would be required regardless of success for that very reason, if you do not wish to uphold our agreement-
MARTOK tosses a data pad on the table.
MARTOK
Calm down, I pay my debts! Here is your information. (darkly) May you choke on it.
KOVIR picks up the data padd. MARTOK pulls out a bottle of blood wine and begins to take liberal sips from it.
MARTOK
Though I wonder why you have such interest in a single human piece of space trash.
KOVIR peruses the data padd.
KOVIR
Because I also pay my debts, Chancellor.
Tight on the data padd, it’s a criminal record written in Klingon with a picture of WEI HUANG on it.
FADE TO BLACK
