"Departure II"

ACT TWO

CUT TO INT. KOVIR’S TAILOR SHOP-DAY

SARA is up and about in her room, pacing back and fourth impatiently.

T’VEL, KOVIR’S daughter enters carrying a tray with a steaming bowl of soup. T’VEL is just as tall as her father and looks just as logical and controlled. She’s a lot younger then KOVIR and slightly younger looking then SARA.

T’VEL

I have brought you something to eat.

SARA

That’s very nice but I really need to contact my ship and let them know where I am.

She pushes past T’VEL, walks down a small hallway to some rickety stairs.

T’VEL

I am sorry but I have strict instructions to-

SARA

I beg your pardon, but I don’t really care what your instructions are. I am on official business on behalf of the United Federation of-

She stops at the top of the stairs to see KOVIR in the middle of fitting a nice, expensive suit on HADAR BARAN, the Orinion Gangster.

Tight on KOVIR, smiling broadly as he looks at her.

KOVIR (cheery)

Please wait upstairs Mrs. Smith; I will help with your gown when I am finished with Mr. Baran’s fitting.

CU on SARA, this day keeps getting weirder.

SARA (confused)

A-alright. (clears her throat, tries to play along) I thought you might like to know that the sleeves are too short.

BARAN is completely unaware of what’s going on, he’s too busy admiring himself in his new suit.

KOVIR

Oh dear! I will have to fix that.

SARA

Please…take all the time you need.

She turns and goes back upstairs while KOVIR and BARAN return start chit chatting like old friends.

BARAN (off screen)

So you were saying about Romulus?

KOVIR (off screen)

Yes! When I was still living on the home world, I used to buy my fabric from this lovely Cardassian tailor who claimed that he was once a gardener for, guess who…

BARAN (off screen, mildly interested)

Who?

KOVIR (off screen)

Sub-Commander Merrok, the Sub-Commander Merrok from the Tal Shiar.

BARAN (off screen, surprised)

No!

The conversation fades as SARA closes the door to her room behind her.  T’VEL is inside the room, laying out SARA’S lunch as if SARA had never left the room.

T’VEL

That man is a member of the Orion Syndicate, when we first arrived to this planet; my father convinced him that we were Romulan refugees and not Federation citizens. On Feron Prime, Federation citizens run the risk of being kidnapped and ransomed by the Orion Syndicate.

SARA

I should stay up here until he leaves.

T’VEL (deadpan)

A very astute observation.

CUT TO INT. NELSON HALLWAY-SPACE

RAND, FROST, and WOLFE are walking down the hallway towards the brig.

RAND

Walsh is working on planetary wide scans but I doubt he’ll have much luck until I get the sensor arrays updated.

WOLFE

Why can’t we use the ones we have?

RAND

The ones we have are over eighty years old; they installed them the day Admiral Sulu died!

FROST

Get to work on them. In the mean time (to Wolfe) Can you be scary?

WOLFE

Um…well…

FROST

That’s a ‘no’. Get that really tall, angry looking lady and have her meet me in Cargo Bay 2.

They walk right off camera.

CUT TO INT. CARGO BAY 2-SPACE

CALLAHAN and FROST are standing in Cargo Bay 2 in front of WEI; two marine guards are standing guard at the door.

CU on FROST.

FROST

Good morning Mister… (reads the name off a data padd) Huang, I trust you slept well.

WEI frowns, gives FROST a glare that screams “Go fuck yourself, buddy”

FROST smiles.

FROST

Okay. So you’re still not talking. Very admirable of you, really impressive.

Still nothing from WEI.

FROST

The deaf mute act is cute but I’m betting that you’ve heard all kinds of things and maybe you’d be willing to tell me a few of them if it’s in your best interest.

WEI (scoffs)

And what, exactly, would you call my best interest?

FROST

Your best interest is you talk to me or (points to Callahan) you talk to Lieutenant Callahan.

CALLAHAN pops her knuckles and then crosses her arms over her chest like an angry dominatrix.

WEI laughs.

WEI

“Good cop, Bad cop”?

FROST (laughing)

It is a little old.

WEI

I mean I haven’t had some one do that since (thinks) since NEVER!

FROST

Yeah, I know. (a beat) Did it work?

WEI (quick reply)

No.

FROST

Lieutenant?

CALLAHAN stands very close to WEI, then glares at him. Violence is implied.

FROST (to Wei)

How about now?

WEI

That’s slightly more effective.

FROST

Where did they take Commander Lyons?

WEI

I have no idea what you’re talking about.

FROST

Who is Koloth working for?

WEI

I don’t have a clue; I never met Koloth until you stuck him in the cell next to me.

CALLAHAN leans over and whispers something in FROST’S ear. He looks at her like she’s crazy.

FROST (to Callahan)

What the hell is a “bone lord’?

Tight on WEI.

WEI

Now that…I might know something about.

CUT TO INT. KOVIR’S TAILOR SHOP-DAY

CU on a ruined Comm Badge.

KOVIR

I believe that it may have been broken during your fall to the ground.

Two shot, KOVIR is upstairs in the living area standing over a small work desk, examining the broken badge while SARA is putting on her uniform in the background.

KOVIR

I will attempt to repair it.

SARA

With any luck they’re scanning the planet for my bio signature and you won’t need to. (puts on her uniform jacket and flexes her arms) did you…do something to this?

KOVIR

I made some modifications to the shoulders; I apologize if that was inappropriate.

SARA

No, don’t be sorry. Fits great.

KOVIR

A Vulcan is never sorry.

SARA

Excuse me?

KOVIR

To “be sorry”, implies an emotional reaction. Therefore, I apologize but I am not “sorry”.

He returns to working on the comm. badge.

SARA (fascinated)

Who are you?

KOVIR

I am Kovir.

SARA

That’s not what I meant.

KOVIR

That is what you asked.

SARA

Alright, why are you here? Why live this close to the Romulan border, why risk life and limb just so you can pretend to be someone you’re not?

KOVIR

I am a former member of Ambassador Spock’s Reunification movement. My original purpose for occupying this sector was to establish a safe haven for other members of the movement to hide from Romulan authorities without detection.

SARA

But the movement ended of two years ago. Ambassador Spock returned to Vulcan.

KOVIR

My daughter and I elected to remain behind to pursue our own private interests.

SARA

You created a life for yourself and you didn’t want to leave.

KOVIR

Yes. (a beat) That life may change now that Starfleet has returned to the area.

SARA

I wouldn’t use the word “returned”, actually we were just assigned to pick up one man and leave.

KOVIR

Koloth.

SARA

How did you know?

KOVIR

He is something of a local celebrity.

SARA (sarcastic)

So I’ve heard.

KOVIR continues with his work, SARA starts examining the room around her. She finds the small wind chime made out of bones.

SARA

What are the bones for?

KOVIR

It is part of a Romulan religious ceremony. I use them to aide me in my disguise.

SARA

Religious ceremony?

Tight CU on KOVIR

KOVIR

The Ceremony of the Bone Lord.
